If you’re old enough to remember when the movie Space Jam came out, then the Air Jordan 11 (XI) that shares the name is probably one of your favorite sneakers. In the film, which released in the fall of 1996, Michael Jordan, Bill Murray, Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Tunes took on the Mon-Stars. Thanks to Michael Jordan dunking from half court in to win the game at the buzzer, Space Jam Jordans became legendary. The close up of the Jordan 11 as MJ leaps basically immortalized this Jordan 11 colorway because it was not a colorway that originally released. Although Michael Jordan himself did wear Space Jams on the court for the Chicago Bulls during their record breaking 72-10 season, the public didn’t get a chance at these Jordans until they became a retro model in 2000. The 2000 release of the Jordan Space Jam colorway was actually the first time a Jordan 11 was released as a retro. The black patent leather combined with the Varsity Royal Blue Jumpman logo and translucent outsole had Jordan collectors and MJ fans lined up for days before the release. The Space Jam Jordan 11 was the first time XIs dropped during the holidays and was the pre-cursor to the chaos that has since become the annual Jordan 11 Mid holiday release. The Air Jordan 11 Space Jam is also the reason Jordan Brand switched from Wednesday releases to Saturday releases after parents called to complain about their kids skipping school.
