(image) Bernar Venet, is a French sculptor and printmaker, born in 1941, whose work has enjoyed international recognition since the 1960s. The title of that lithograph, Random Combination of Indetermine Lines, is also that of an important series of sculptures. A series that began in the early 90's and which follows the Indeterminate Lines series It is a question for the artist of arranging on the ground rods of corten steel, his material of predilection. In the Collapses series, the gigantic arches are pushed against each other and fall to the ground, creating a seemingly random arrangement that is nonetheless subject to physical principles such as inevitable gravity. This lithograph is an integral part of this series. Bernar Venet suggests a ground line and shadows, defining a pictorial space. On this represented ground are "posed" rods whose weight can be perceived. They intermingle to form a pattern that does not seem predefined but spontaneous. It is a tribute to the material in what it has of fascinating, in its physicality, its gravity, its power. The artist has the ability to harmoniously order this raw material. A beautiful work by Venet, in line with his works on paper, sober and powerful. LCD5443
